Got no love for politicians,
or that crazy scene in D.C.,
It's just a power-mad town...
Cool. Last month, I saw Aimee Mann for the first time, and this month I'm going to see Tori Amos. They've got very different styles, but they're my favorite female singer/songwriters, yet it's taken me ten years to get around to attending their concerts. Heh... And, it looks like I might be heading down to the Tori show in the company of a lovely young woman. :)
Speaking of Tori, while I was bummed last month when I lost my chain ring, I opened my limited edition copy of the strange little girl's new CD, "Scarlet's Walk," on Friday, and in addition to the compact disc and DVD and booklet, I found a tiny penguin charm! Needless to say, it's on my silver chain now, between the ankh and the Mayan sun... I'd still like a ring, but I'm not going to wear another chain ring, and I've got other things on which to spend money at the moment.
I wonder how many of those opposed to the death penalty are still opposed to it in light of the sniper. I am. It looks like Illinois Governor George Ryan is, as well. Those who cling to the Bible's (actually the Babylonian king Hammurabi's) "an eye for an eye" law of retribution would do well to remember Gandhi's take on it: an eye for an eye only makes the whole world blind. If a killer must be executed, then his executioner, as a killer, should also be killed. Ad infinitum. And giving the State the power to kill just seems like a bad idea to me. The Europeans and other civilized people around the world have abolished the death penalty; when will America catch up to them morally?
I wish Sharon hadn't survived today's no-confidence vote. I just don't see peace, permanent or temporary, returning to the region until a more rational leader is running Israel.
I wish the Chechens hadn't taken those hostages, whether the operation was sanctioned by the government-in-exile or not. Countless lives were lost, though unlike Dubya I do believe that the Russians share the blame for that, and in the end it was very negative publicity for the rebels. Surely they didn't believe that Putin would consider pulling troops out of Chechnya under those circumstances. I certainly agree that that war needs to end, and the situation needs to be resolved, but terrorism is just not an acceptable means, regardless of the end.
Finally, a movie whose title adequately and accurately describes those who made, starred in, and will go see it: "Jackass."
Anyone want to join me in voting for third-party candidates
tomorrow? Heh-heh... See ya!
